Things Got Strange at Two Lyon Co Schools Friday

The Lyon County School District says no evidence of credible threats were found after incidents at two county schools Friday. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says just before 9:30AM, a staff member at Fernley High School got a text message from somebody with Western Montana College that was confusing, and not a credible or direct threat, but led deputies to respond to ensure everyone’s safety. The high school went into a precautionary lockdown that was lifted after ten minutes. Then a man with a “known mental illness” contacted Riverview Elementary School in Dayton and the Mason Valley Boys and Girls Club at Sutro Elementary School making comments that were perceived as possible threats. Deputies responded to Riverview and did a search while students and staff were sheltered in place for several minutes, but no evidence of a threat was found and everything was reopened. The man has been identified as a Reno resident who often calls various places in Lyon County with comments that sound like threats, but turn out not to be. He is not in custody, but an investigation continues.
