California’s Department of Fish and Wildlife has stopped the most prolific poacher of raptors that the state has ever seen. 67 year old Richard Parker was arrested after a witness’ tip led them to his 80 care property in Standish, in Lassen County near the Nevada stateline. Investigators found 126 dead birds including dozens of red tailed hawks, at least one owl, and a rare type of hawk. Wildlife officials also recovered two dead bobcats, and found a stuffed mountain lion inside Parker’s home. It’s been illegal to kill or possess a mountain lion, or its parts, since Proposition 117 passed in 1991. Parker now faces six months in jail, and could be on the hook for over a half million dollars in restitution, $5,000 for each dead bird and $10,000 for the mountain lion.
