Latest Storm Information, Sandbag Locations

A strong, warm atmospheric river headed our way has triggered a series of flood watches and warnings for western Nevada and the Lake Tahoe-area into the weekend. The National Weather service issued a flood warning effective Saturday morning to early Sunday for the Truckee River in Reno and Sparks, as well as further downstream in Storey County. Warnings also are in effect at Truckee, California, where Lake Tahoe empties into the Truckee River, and for the Carson River south of Carson City. As much as 4 inches of rain is forecast in the upper elevations, with up to 2.5 inches at Tahoe and an inch in the valleys.

If you need sandbags, there are numerous locations to pick them.

Take your own shovel. There are stacks of empty bags and piles of sand in each location.

The city has limited quantities of pre-filled bags for those with disabilities at the Corporation Yard location.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE: The City of South Lake Tahoe would like to remind residents that sand bags are available at no cost year-round. Sand and sand bags are available at the City’s Public Works Yard at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd. as well as South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Station #3 at 2101 Lake Tahoe Blvd.

To pick-up your sand bags, proceed through the gate at 1160 Rufus Allen Blvd. and drive to the back of the lot. At the back of the lot is a large sand mound, shovels and bags. Residents fill their own bags and transport back to their own residence. Please leave the shovels so that other residents may use and try to limit the number of bags to 10 per visit.

Access to sand bags is available during normal business hours, Monday-Friday 7:30am-4pm.

LYON COUNTY: Based upon projected weather forecast for this weekend Lyon County has implemented self-fill sand bag locations in Central Lyon County.

Locations are as follows:

Lyon County will monitor these locations and will stock them with more supplies as needed. Currently each location has 8+ tons of sand and 2 bundles of sandbags (1000 bags).
