Reno Mayor Signs Letter Asking For Citizenship Question to be Removed From 2020 Census

Mayor Hillary Schieve is one of 160 mayors to sign a letter directed to the US Census Bureau about a citizenship question. Recently the U.S. Census Bureau announced it would ask, “Are you a U.S. Citizen?” on its questionnaire in 2020. Mayor Schieve says that could discourage some people from filling out the census at all, which could jeopardize crucial federal funds from coming to our area. 17 states and 7 cities along with the U.S. Conference of Mayors have filed a lawsuit in an effort to have the question removed. The Census Bureau says the citizenship question is necessary to enforce the Voting Rights Act.
