Planning Commission Considering Accessory Dwelling Units in Reno

Trying to find a solution to the housing crunch in northern Nevada, the Reno Planning Commission discussed a proposal that would allow homeowners with properties covering more than 9,000 square feet to build second units available for rent. Heater Manzo, Reno assistant planner, says the Accessory Dwelling Units would provide the opportunity to add more affordable housing. Some at the meeting voiced concerns over what kind of impacts the proposal could have on a neighborhood.

The planning commission also brought up concerns about preventing properties from becoming AirBNB’s or rentable office space and asked staff to come back with a revised proposal at a later meeting.
