The Placer County Sheriff’s Office has released the name of the pilot who was killed in a plane crash Tuesday morning south of Truckee. 60-year-old Kenneth Whittall-Scherfee of Carmichael, California was also the owner of the plane. The name of the second person who died has not been released, another person is critically injured. The Federal Aviation Administration says the single-engine plane crashed on the west side of Highway 267 near Mercer Flats and the Northstar golf course shortly before 7:40am. A spokesperson from the nearby Truckee-Tahoe Airport says the pilot had left the airport headed east at 7:33 a.m. and reported engine problems almost immediately. He was trying to return to the airport when the crash occurred. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, along with the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
