The Whaleback Fire has burned more than 16,000 acres or more than 25 square miles. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but fire crews have established 32 percent containment around the burn area. Mandatory evacuations are still in place for the community of Spalding, the Gallatin Marina, Ronald McDonald House and the Merrill, Christie, Eagle and Aspen campgrounds. The fire is burning in the Lassen National Forest 30 miles north of Susanville. A community meeting to update residents about the fight is scheduled for tonight at 6:00 pm in Jensen Hall at Lassen County Fairgrounds, 195 Russell Avenue, Susanville.
