Update on Hazmat Situation in Reno Last Week

The Reno Fire Department has determined the nature of the materials that led to a hazardous materials call, but they don’t know what the materials were to be used for. Division Chief Steve Leighton says the two substances were found in jugs in a parking lot; were nitric acid, a liquid, and ammonium sulfide, a powder. They can be used for a variety of things, including as part of a mixture to make methamphetamine, but also for legitimate purposed. No one has been arrested, but the investigation continues. A hazmat team responded to the call September 27th on W. 4th Street just west of Keystone Ave. REMSA says a person at Lyons Crest Mobile Home Park had a hazardous substance on his or her face and was treated on the scene.
