Reno Avoids a Garbage Strike

The threat of a strike by Reno garbage collectors has been avoided for now. A federal judge last week stopped a possible strike by Teamsters Local 533, citing the no-strike clause in their contract with Waste Management. Federal Judge Larry Hicks ruled trash truck drivers who are seeking longer, less-supervised lunch breaks need to go to arbitration. The dispute started in July when Waste Management changed the way trash truck drivers are supposed to take their half-hour, unpaid lunch break. The new rules required drivers to keep a lunch break-logging device in their trucks.
