It’s National Tax Security Awareness week, and the IRS is issuing a warning about tax scams as filing season approaches, so you don’t get your refund stolen. Phishing scams and bogus email schemes increased 60 percent in 2018. Keep an eye out for malware that uses email subjects like “IRS Important Notice,” “IRS Taxpayer Notice,” or if they demand a payment or threaten to seize your refund. And, phone scams, where the caller pretends to be from the IRS and threatening the taxpayer with a lawsuit or with arrest if a payment isn’t made immediately, usually through a debit card. You can avoid getting gripped off by never open a link or attachment from an unknown or suspicious source, and using security software and strong passwords to protect online accounts.
