Battle Over WCSD Background Checks is Coming

Civil rights groups say the Washoe County School District Superintendent and Board of Trustees new policy to do background checks on all parents who visit their children’s schools, is discriminatory. The policy includes a search for open warrants and a provision to report visiting parents with warrants to law enforcement. The ACLU argues such a practice will scare already fearful immigrant families, many of whom are already worried about sending their children to school in the current political climate. ACLU of Nevada Executive Director Tod Story says Parents and families should be able to support their children through participation in school activities without being afraid of being caught up in a law enforcement dragnet.
