While the President was delivering his State of the Union Speech, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve delivered her fourth State of the City address at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. The theme of this year’s State of the City was “Changing the Game in the Biggest Little City.” The address celebrated sports and recreation and the positive impact they have on our community.
Each Councilmember also delivered a speech. The Mayor highlighted some accomplishments for the City in the last year including TMCC getting a 15 million dollar sports facility, the purchase of two new fire engines for Reno fire, adding 1600 affordable housing units, increasing the number of residential housing permits by 21 percent, and the work of the Motel Inspection Team. One aspect of the speech focused on grants received this year to reduce opioid overdoses and gun violence. She says violent gun crime is down 16-percent in Reno.
Mayor Schieve said the focus for 2019 will be growth, jobs, the homeless, mental health, and affordable housing.
