The school safety task force gave a presentation yesterday to lawmakers, giving three recommendations. It’s a culmination of a year’s worth of work from educators, parents, teachers and students in the task force. The first recommendation is to integrate social emotional learning statewide, require statewide social/emotional behavior programming, and request additional block funding to be made available to districts. Recommendation 2 is to establish statewide recommendation ratios for all school-based mental health providers. And Recommendation 3 is to include school nurses, counselors and psychologists in the NDE Integrated System of Funding for Medical Aid and Social Work Grant and enable the department to use funds from the current social work block grant program to expand schools ability to pay for behavioral health services support and a medical director.
