Phone Scams Becoming More Elaborate

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a new, more elaborate phone scam. This time the scammers leave a call-back number and when people call they get a “phone tree” with the correct names and extensions of sheriff’s office personnel. It also includes the name and extension of the scammer. In this case, the scammers call and claim to have a warrant for someone. The scammer then gives instructions for making payments, such as using a cash card or a pre-paid credit card. The sheriffs office DOES NOT negotiate over warrants so hang up.
