Food Bank: Food Insecurity Hits Children the Hardest

Food Bank of Northern Nevada announced the release of “Map the Meal Gap 2019,” the latest report by Feeding America on food insecurity and the cost of food at both the county and congressional district level. It is the only study that provides food insecurity data at the local level. Map the Meal Gap 2019 reveals that food insecurity exists in every county in service area for Food Bank of Northern Nevada. It also shows that children are more likely to be food insecure, with the child food insecurity rate at 18.8% compared to 11.1% for the overall population for northern Nevada. In the Food Bank’s service area, 29.2% of food insecure individuals do not qualify for federal nutrition programs. In northern Nevada, children are at a higher risk of food insecurity compared to the general population, 18.8% of children are estimated to be food insecure compared to 11.1% among the general population.
