Scam Calls Claim to be From The Mayor’s Office

The City of Reno is advising the public of recent spoofing calls that are occurring in our area, specifically calls that claim to be from Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve or her representative. Scammers often use neighbor spoofing so it appears that an incoming call is coming from a local number, or spoof a number from a company or a government agency that you may already know and trust. If you answer, they use scam scripts to try to steal your money or valuable personal information, which can be used in fraudulent activity. The phone calls could also contain false information and statements from or about public officials. The scams are not necessarily limited to phone calls; users can also get spoofed via text message.  If you think you’ve been the victim of a spoofing scam, you can file a complaint with the FCC. Anyone who has suffered a loss as a result of a scam is encouraged to contact the Reno Police Department at 775-334-COPS, or file a report online at RenoPD.com.
