Damonte Ranch High School Student Diagnosed With Pertussis

One student has been diagnosed with pertussis, also known as whooping cough, at Damonte Ranch High School. The student is currently receiving medical treatment. The school is asking all parents to look for signs of pertussis in their children, and keep them home if they exhibit any symptoms. Watch for a runny nose, congestion, sneezing, and a mild cough or mild fever. After 1-2 weeks, the cough worsens due to thick mucus in the airways, resulting in bursts of rapid coughing. Those with pertussis will even turn blue from a lack of oxygen.
