Reno Protests Turn Violent, Police Deploy “Tear Gas,” Mayor Orders Curfew

Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve has imposed a curfew on the city. Schieve said the city of Reno will not tolerate excessive use of force and that, “Citizens are advised to stay indoors and avoid public gatherings” She adds, “Peaceful protest and the right to assembly are sacred. Violence and destruction are not.” An estimated 1,000 or more people protest in downtown Reno Saturday, demanding justice for George Floyd, the Minnesota man who died while in custody. Graffiti was painted at Reno Police Department and small fire were set by flag burning protesters. Some unruly protesters smashed windows on police vehicles. Someone also attempted to smash their way into City Hall, and police deployed teargas to break it up. Several fires were set.
