The Governor’s Mask Mandate is Now in Effect

Governor Steve Sisolak’s order mandating the use of face coverings in public went into effect at 11:59 last night.

Law enforcement agencies said they will not be enforcing the law, with an explanation that it is up to the health department to enforce it.

Washoe County Sheriff Darin Balaam said in a statement:

“It would be inappropriate for deputies to criminally enforce Governor Sisolak’s mask mandate or social distancing. Due to the minor nature of the offenses, the potential for negative encounters, and various ways the order could be violated our deputies will instead continue in an educational capacity in partnership with the Washoe County Board of Health.”
