A massive pile of railroad ties is burning in Hazen, East of Fernley. The fire broke out Wednesday afternoon about 430pm, sending up a huge plume of black smoke. That smoke is more toxic than your average smoke, so avoid the area. Churchill County is asking its residents to remain indoors, and anyone with breathing problems should be on alert. Authorities have shut off and are draining a gas line in the area to prevent an explosion, and have evacuated about 20 people. U.S. 50 Alternate is closed in both directions from Farm District Road at the roundabout in Fernley to Carr lane.
