Nevada Has a Shortage of State Troopers

Data from the Department of Public Safety says one in three state trooper position in Nevada is vacant. That’s 139 positions needed as of the start of the year. Wayne Dice of the Nevada Police Union says he doesn’t know what it will take for the legislature to understand this. State troopers in Nevada are paid about 24% less than most local police departments. Gov. Joe Lombardo is proposing pay increases for state employees by as much as 8% one year followed by 4% the next. That still falls short of what a trooper could make in another agency, and many are expected to continue to leave.
