NDOT Testing New Lighting System, Will Close Lanes on I-580

The Nevada Department of Transportation is warning of some traffic disruptions on I-580 through Washoe Valley starting Monday.

The project is a test of “smart” street lighting, part of the “Internet of Things” or IoT. Intelligent data communication with roadway lighting will allow staff to receive alerts when lights are out, and the lights can be set to automatically dim when no vehicles are present, to save energy, reduce carbon footprint, and cut down light pollution.

The work begins Monday, August 7th. Although most of the work will be on the shoulders, contractors will periodically close single lanes between Eastlake & Bowers. Ramps will also occasionally be closed at night between 9 p.m.and 5 a.m. on weekdays. The work is scheduled to continue through October.
