Washoe County Health District Confirms Case of Hantavirus

The Washoe County Health District is reporting a confirmed Hantavirus case in Washoe County. A male in his 60s who has been hospitalized after being exposed to rodent droppings weeks prior. The district had information on the person’s condition. It’s the first Hantavirus case reported in Washoe County since November 2022. The last Hantavirus death was reported in December 2020.

Early Hantavirus symptoms can include fever, headache, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea 1-8 weeks after exposure. Late symptoms develop four to 10 days after initial symptoms and include coughing, shortness of breath and fluid buildup in the lungs.
