(South Lake Tahoe, CA) — A 79-year-old man is behind bars on suspicion of sexual assault and false imprisonment in South Lake Tahoe. Gilbert Avila, who was arrested on Tuesday, is in custody in Nevada and will be extradited to South Lake Tahoe. Police say the crimes were committed between 2016 and 2023, while Avila worked as a private security guard. Detectives say he abused his position of perceived authority to approach vulnerable women walking along local highways at night. He allegedly gained the women’s trust, then sexually assaulted them.
