Groundwater Vanishing Faster Than Ever From Colorado River Basin

(Las Vegas, NV) — A new study shows groundwater is vanishing from the Colorado River Basin at a faster rate than ever. The study is from researchers at Arizona State University. It says, between April of 2002 and October of 2024, nearly 28 million acre-feet of water has been lost from the ground. That is an amount of water comparable to the volume of Lake Mead. This has happened about twice as fast as water on the surface has vanished. The findings are based on a study of satellite images.
