Reno police say they’ve been taking an increasing number of reports on a variety of phone scams. They say some of the phone scams in our area have been IRS, Green Dot, NV Energy, and scams telling people they have warrants for their arrest and to send money to prevent getting arrested. The most recent phone scam involves citizens receiving calls and texts from people claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House telling potential victims they have won a prize. After a lengthy and legitimately sounding phone call, the victims agree to send a money order to an address and after the scammers receive the money, they contact the victim claiming that in order to get their prize they have to send additional funds. Unfortunately one victim has reported losing over $30,000 to this recent scam.
