Investigators with the Nevada Highway Patrol are looking into a fatal crash in west Reno on Friday Morning. Troopers were called to the head-on collision on eastbound Interstates 80 just east of the Mogul Road overpass a little before 5:00 this morning. Investigators say 58-year-old Elaine Sands of Reno was driving a Subaru SUV the wrong direction on 80, westbound on the eastbound slow lane, west of Robb Drive with her lights off. The driver of a Toyota Yaris was headed east on 80 in the slow lane when the vehicles slammed into each other. Sands was pronounced dead at the crash scene. The Toyota driver is being treated in a hospital and is stable; a passenger in the Toyota is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. It’s not yet known if Sands was impaired at the time of the collision.
