A local expert is part of nationwide Zika Response Working Group, assessing the threat the virus has on the United States. The team has been analyzing what’s been going on in South and Central America since December. Dr. James Wilson is with the Nevada State Infectious Disease Forecast Center. While he says the disease will make its way to this country, there’s no reason to believe it will be widespread. It may not even affect Nevada. His advice: Pregnant women should avoid unnecessary travel during this hot period of transmission. Women exposed to the virus can have children with a syndrome that leaves their brains underdeveloped; their heads undersized, and life expectancy is short.
