The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office is getting reports about scammers posing as Sheriff’s Office personnel to fraudulently obtain money. The scammers are using names of Sheriff’s Office personnel, and manipulate phone technology so the recipient’s caller ID shows an actual Sheriff’s Office number. The scammer tells the person there is a warrant out for his or her arrest for a certain fine, and their options are to surrender to the Sheriff’s Office for arrest, or pay a “reduced” payment of the fine. The scammer usually requests payment through an “eGift” cash card or similar payment to a specified account or name given by the caller.
