The Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi, joined Governor Sandoval, Senator Dean Heller and other dignitaries, at the formal dedication of the only geothermal power plant in the world that combines geothermal energy with two kinds of solar technology. That’s the Stillwater Geothermal Plant near Fallon. Italy was the site of the first geothermal experiment a century ago, that established the potential to use steam from from underground to create electricity. The Nevada plant is the first to use solar thermal, and solar panel-energy to back up geothermal resources to maximize efficiency. The plant can produce enough energy to power more than 11,000 homes.
