Commerce Tax In Hands Of Supreme Court

The battle over the commerce tax is in the hands of the state Supreme Court. Justices will consider whether a ballot question that would repeal it will be on the ballot. A Carson City judge has already approved the language of the repeal proposal. That cleared the way for signiture gathering. State Controller Ron Knecht says he’s confident the repeal will also be approved by the state’s highest court. But with 55 thousand verified signatures needed by June 21st, the petition currently has only about 20 thousand. The goal of the tax was to raise funds for schools. Governor Sandoval says repeal would mean devastating cuts to education.
