The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office continues to receive numerous reports about a phone scam in which the scammers pose as Washoe County Sheriff’s Office personnel to fraudulently get money from people. The scammers claim there is an outstanding warrant and that a fine must be paid to avoid arrest. The reason for the warrant is represented as being anything from a traffic violation to failure to pay full income tax requirements to the Internal Revenue Service. The scammers then tell potential victims their options are to surrender themselves to the Sheriff’s Office for arrest, or pay a “reduced” payment of the fine to take care of the warrant.
