Someone has been trying to damage most of the traffic signs and signals in the rural community of Smith Valley. Lyon County law enforcement and state transportation officials say they began getting reports in late September of traffic signs and lights being shot out with a shotgun. NDOT says in all 28 signs and five traffic lights were damaged — a significant fraction of the total in this rural community. The cost of replacing them will top $13,000 just the signs and lights. NDOT has replaced signs that were unreadable. Anyone with information is asked to call Secret Witness at 322-4900.
