Gov. Brian Sandoval vetoed his first bill of the session, rejecting an initiative to automatically sign up people to vote when they get a driver’s license. The Governor says the measure “extinguishes a fundamental, individual choice, the right of eligible voters to decide for themselves whether they desire to apply to register to vote, forfeiting this basic decision to state government.” The Automatic Voter Registration Initiative, or IP1, was sent to the governor last week. Sandoval says the current process “provides the necessary balance for voluntary and informed voter registration.” The measure will be on the 2018 ballot.
