The Future of The Millennium Scholarship in Question

If you’ve got kids in high school, keep an eye on the Millennium Scholarship program. It might be going under. Grant Hewitt, Chief of Staff for the state treasurer, told the Assembly Ways & Means committee that without additional funding, there won’t be any money for Millennium Scholarships after 2018. About $15 million in tobacco settlement funds go into the program, and about 7 1/2 million more comes from the Unclaimed Property fund. But the program cost about 30 million in 2016.
Governor Sandoval has proposed putting 20 million more dollars into the program which would fund it for another year, through 2019, but it still requires approval of the legislature.
