The Washoe County School District is taking some heat for another deficit, this time it’s about 30 million dollars. District leaders say they’re are looking everywhere for cuts, but don’t want to layoff teachers, or other staff. It’s likely some positions in central services will remain unfilled, but teacher layoffs are only a last resort if all else fails. Other tools they’ve used in the past to close budget gaps, like increasing class sizes are getting used up. Dr. Kristin McDaniel is assistant superintendent– she says they’ve actually reduced a 40 million dollar gap to 30, and searching for ways to save another five million. District officials also say on Nevada Newsmakers, deficits aren’t new, they’ve been dealing with deficits every year for a decade, and say schools in Nevada are chronically under funded, not just in Washoe County.
