Body Camera Bill Being Sponsored by Senate Majority Leader

A bill that would require all law enforcement officers in the state who interact with the public to wear body cameras on the job, is sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford. He says it’s a policy that can protect both police and the public. Washoe County Sheriff Chuck Allen says he’s looked into outfitting his deputies with cameras, since he believes they would help validate many of the decisions made by law enforcement every day. That plan though could cost $750 thousand in Washoe County over a five year implementation period. NHP got a million dollars in the last legislature, but needs another 478 thousand for data transfer and storage per year. SB 176 would authorize county commissions to increase the 9-1-1 phone surcharge, currently 25 cents per month, to fund it.
