It’s Going to be a Long Fire Season According to Fire Chief

With three new fire outbreaks Monday, it’s still a challenging fire season, and Truckee Meadows Chief Charles Moore told Washoe County Commissioners it may be a long one. He expects it to continue through October or into November, or until the first snow and cooler temperatures set in.

A brush fire in the Woodchuck Circle area west of Reno, is now 90% contained. Officials estimate the fire has burned about 60 acres. Crews were on scene overnight for mop up operations. An evacuation advisory has been lifted and all roads that were closed during the firefight have been reopened. There is no word yet regarding the cause, but Truckee Meadows Chief Charlie Moore says it started at a home construction site on Woodchuck. No other structures burned, though about 100 structures were threatened and several back yards burned.
Fire crews are also fighting a brush fire south of Boomtown in the hills. The Cone Fire was reported about 11AM Tuesday. There is no word yet on the cause. It’s estimated to be about 3.2 acres and 75% contained. Hand crews have had to hike in, as it’s a remote area. There are no structures in the area; the fire is burning just south of Fuller Lake, east of where I-80 crosses into California. The fire is being fought by the US Forest Service with the Nevada Division of Forestry.
