Christmas Surprise in Salvation Army Red Kettle

{KOH} – The Salvation Army’s Red Kettles are everywhere during the Christmas season. But you’d be surprised at what they find at the end of the day.  According to Major Charles Fowler, the Salvation Army’s Reno Corps coordinator, they’ve found gum wrappers, pocket lint, game tokens, Alcoholics Anonymous chips, jewelry, and even keys. But last week, they literally found a gold mine in a kettle at the Walmart on Kietzke: a 1979 gold Krugerrand. This is the 3rd year in a row the Salvation Army has received a gift in this way. Allen Rowe of Northern Nevada Coin estimates this year’s coin is worth around $1,200. The Red Kettle campaign is down 13% compared to last season, and the bells will stop ringing on Dec. 23 so drop by, and drop something in.
