The Perry Fire, burning through grass and brush west of Pyramid Lake, has grown to 42,399 acres. That’s more than 66 square miles. Officials say containment is at 31 percent. Fire commanders say as the fire moves downhill into more even terrain, firefighters and equipment will have easier access to the perimeter and can increase containment. The Northern Nevada American Red Cross Disaster Action Team has opened a shelter at Ironwood Event Center to assist people who have been evacuated from the fires burning here and in California. The shelter is at 5600 Whiskey Springs Road in Reno. The shelter will also take livestock. Threats to residences in upper Warm Springs Valley, such as those on the Pauite and Right Hand Fork Canyons continue to be a major concern for emergency management and are still under evacuation. However, evacuations have been lifted for areas in the Warm Springs Valley west of Pasture View Road.
