The Whaleback Fire is 18,726 acres or more than 29 square miles. Fire crews have established 95 percent containment around the burn area. The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office says the evacuation order for Spalding has been lifted and it’s safe for residents to return to their homes. Only residents are allowed in, and they must show proof of residency. The fire is burning in the Lassen National Forest 30 miles north of Susanville.
