The US Forest Service is sending a reminder that even though we’re seeing cooler temperatures, fire danger is still very high this time of year. Vegetation that can feed a wildfire has had all summer to dry out and is ready to burn. Some precautions you can take around your home are keeping rain gutters and roofs clear of pine needles and other flammable debris. Never store combustible materials under your deck and enclose deck sides with one-quarter inch or smaller wire mesh to prevent debris from accumulating underneath. Cover your attic and foundation vents with one-eighth inch wire mesh or install ember resistant vents. Create defensible space at least five feet wide around the base of the house using gravel, rock, concrete, irrigated lawn or irrigated herbaceous plants. And don’t forget to junk the junipers, which are highly flammable.
