A Dayton man who fired more than a dozen bullets into a car with five men of the Sikh religion inside, has drawn a sentence of 11 to 34 years in prison, in what’s being called Carson City’s first hate crime conviction. Travis Mickelson injured one of the men and was found guilty of attempted murder with a hate crime enhancement for the 2017 attack. Mickelson claimed he fired at the men because he thought they were Muslims and didn’t like the way they’d looked at his wife.
