One of the long standing traditions at the Great Reno Balloon Race at Rancho San Rafael Park is coming to an end. GRBR’s Board of Directors has put a halt to the competition segment of the event where bean bags are dropped on targets on the field from balloons, citing safety concerns. The size of the event, power lines near the field, and maintaining a safety line away from spectators so pilots can hit their targets were hurdles to meet FAA regulation compliance. In place of the competition, they’re moving to Pilot Games, where pilots can collect tokens during the event and get a prize when the race wraps up.
