A bill passed in 2015 Republican led Legislature, that would remove guns permanently from a person convicted of domestic violence, even on a first offense, is getting tested. A Las Vegas man facing charges asked for a jury trial because of the loss of rights that would come with conviction, and was denied. The state Supreme Court now says Christopher Anderson should have had a jury trial. In most cases domestic battery is a misdemeanor and trials are conducted by a judge, without a jury. Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford says when the right to a jury trial exists, most folks take it. Now local courts are scrambling to prepare for more jury trials and it may even involve renovations of some courtrooms. Ford says he agrees with the court decision but adds, there are real and emotional costs associated with it.
