The Las Vegas Review Journal is reporting, the city of Las Vegas has stopped charging people with misdemeanor domestic violence, after a state Supreme Court decision that defendants were entitled to jury trials, because a conviction for domestic violence puts their right to own guns at risk, under laws aimed at targeting actual violent behavior. The newspaper says the city is instead prosecuting cases as “Simple battery” which doesn’t carry the same conviction requirements including mandatory counseling, and enhancement to a felony charge for third domestic violence offense. There’s a concern that municipal courts cannot handle hundreds of jury trials each month.
