(KOH) – The meetings between the people who make decisions regarding NIAA sports will move forward with a proposed realignment that will see some changes. Notably, the 5A WILL NOT contain any teams from northern Nevada and will move Wooster to 4A in football and North Valleys to 3A in all sports. The dominance of Bishop Gorman on the football field is a hot-button issue due to the Gaels nine consecutive state championships, a Nevada state record. Football will be aligned differently from other sports. The proposed realignment does away with the annual north vs south large school championship.
This game of pick your classification, which was started in Yerington has become more of a headache than it really needs to be. Yerington was competing in all sports in the 3A a decade ago, but wanted to compete in the 2A for football. Its request to move down to the 2A in all sports was denied. Enrollment numbers were used at that time and Yerington, which enrolled at the 3A level petitioned to move down in football and was granted that for a period of time.
The realignment proposals will be voted on by the NIAA Jan. 17 in Reno.
For now, hand out trophies to everyone who has a whistle or uniform.
